We love books at our house. I was thinking the other day, that we could use about 20 more book shelves! We are overflowing with more books than we have space to fit. But the books that pass the test, are the ones we want to read over and over again. They become part of our family dialogue and take up residence not just on our shelves, but in our hearts.
For any mom who want to know the value of reading to your children (at every age) I would suggest this awesome resource:
Do not be tempted to skip to the amazing list of books for your children. Read the chapters leading up to this list. I cried as I read it! It will forever change the way you look at reading aloud with your kids.
I asked my almost 11 year old what her favorite book of all was and she mentioned this book to me:
There are several books in the series about girls of faith who grew up to be women who made a difference for God. Inspiring even for moms! (they also make one for boys!)
Last year, we read a precious book that I must recommend to you as you consider what books you will share with your kids this year. It is by E. Nesbit:
I think I enjoyed it as much as my girls did. It is a story that will move you {once again} to tears. I love a book that uses language that makes you stop and WANT to re-read a sentence. Just because it sounds nice coming out of your mouth. This book is like that! I shared one of my favorite quotes in a post about stories. You can read it by clicking here.
So what about you? What books do you love to share with your kids? What is their favorite book? I am always looking for good read aloud books to add to my list!
Today I am linking up to the Homeschool Village. For more posts on books and reading with your children, click the button below:

I am honored to be part of the HS Village and I love what is happening there!
Thank you for all your hard work!
Thanks for sharing these books! My reading list is definitely growing while reading everyone’s posts linked to THV:)
Thanks for the recommendations, i love the look of the one your daughter loves, off to check that out now. Its hard finding suitable reading material for teenagers xx
Oh, we are book lovers here, too. I have way too many, but I simply love books and love the fact that my kids love books. My favorite younger reader book is A Mother for Choco by Keiko Kasza…such a sweet read.
And while I know we’re on the subject of books, I’d just like to mention the movie (based on the books) Ramona & Beezus is superb!!! It’s nice to have a movie that is being shown in the theaters that is filled with the things I’d want my daughter to see, so I just had to share it!
We also love read alouds at my house. Even though my kids are now teens, we always have a book or two that I am reading to them as well as one for the entire family.
Honey for a Child’s Heart is an incredible resource, one we used for several years. Honey for a Woman’s Heart is wonderful too.
I’ve heard good things about the Railway Children. I will have to check that out!
I JUST saw the Railway Children audio book at the Library tonight, but I put it back becaue I wasn’t sure about it. Thanks for the review – we’ll have to grab it next time!
Pick it up for sure! You will love this story!
I cannot help but smile a bit when I stumble across another parallel between your activities with your girls and mine with my boys. We have enjoyed discovering great character among the lives of the “Ten Boys Who…” series. 🙂 I so delight in sharing moments here.
Looks like a great list. I love the Railway Children and just now reading ‘Honey for a Child’s Heart, recommended by one of my lovely readers. That Girl (Boy) who changed the World series sounds wonderful. I’m going to have to check those out/remember them for when my two are a little older!
Okay, I’m going to try to refollow you. I’ve never stopped but for some reason my dashboard does not pick up your new posts. It’s really frustrating. You’re on the list but it’s stuck on a post from about a month ago. Wish me luck in getting the glitch fixed.
Hi Michelle! So sorry for the confusion! I recently made the switch to WordPress. My url is now http://29lincolnavenue.com, so that is why the Blogspot url is not updating. The best way to make sure you get all the post updates is to subscribe by email. That way, new posts will go directly to your email. I’m so glad you stopped by so we could reconnect! I know how much you love books so I am glad you have heard of The Railway Children. It is one of my top favorite books for sure!
oh wait, what happened to your followers?? I’m not on twitter but I will subscribe via google. I don’t check that list as often but it’ll be better. Now I understand why its not updating at least-
Oh my goodness how will I ever keep track of all these great books I’m coming across? Thanks for the recommendations– I’m looking into the Railway Children right now. I think it sounds like something my son would enjoy. 🙂
