“I guess I got to go,” I say, even though I’d rather spend the rest of my life right here in Aibileen’s cozy little kitchen, having her explain the world to me. That’s what I love about Aibileen, she can take the most complicated things in life and wrap them up so small and simple, they’ll fit right in your pocket.”
Minny, from The Help, p. 407.

And that’s what I love about this book. It has words that draw pictures so vividly, you think you are in Jackson, Mississippi, too, sharing stories with Minny & Aibileen while drinking a Coca-Cola.
Did you read it?
What did you love about it?
Are you going to see the movie?
I am, and I can’t wait!
Have a great weekend!

{Next week is back to school week for us. I’ll be writing about all things school related. I hope you join me!}
I LOVED the book, can’t wait to see the movie! I think my favorite part was the complexity of the relationships. The unspoken rules, how some of the help resented it, and some seemed resigned, how some of them were treated fairly, but most were not. Wasn’t it amazing, that the help was trusted with the raising of the most valuable (the children) but the silver had to be counted, and they weren’t allowed to use the same bathroom. That was all so backward to me! I hope the movie doesn’t disappoint.
So true – loved the way friendship was presented. And the way the kids still responded to the “Help” even when they were grown. I loved when Mr. Johnny asked Minny to make him a “real” BLT!
Thanks for “book chatting” with me!
I loved this book!! I, too, felt like I was sucked in to the South while I was reading. I’ve heard the movie is fantastic…a definite must-see with some quality girlfriends 🙂
It was such a nice surprise! I don’t read fiction much, but this was my third book this summer! Loved every page!
Loved the book…saw movie last night with my staff team women. Really good. Can’t get enough of these characters!! Seeing it again with mom & sis!
I’m going tonight with some friends and I can’t wait! I was hoping we could have seen in in CO while we were there to redeem the horrible movie we saw last time! 🙂
I loved this story as well. Like others have mentioned, you can truly picture yourself there sharing stories and enjoying the friendships. I have been wanting to make a Caramel Cake ever since reading this book! 🙂
My sis has never read the book, so she wants to read it before we go. So…she is taking it with her on vacation this week and then we are planning on going to see it once she comes back…if I can wait that long! 🙂
Oh, but to see it with your sister will be sweet! And then you can go find some Carmel Cake and talk about it till well past midnight! So rich with relationships and a reminder what beautiful truly is! I hope she is a fast reader Amy!
Yep, I read it awhile back and cannot wait to see the movie with Gabriella, her friend and her friend’s mom (my friend!) 🙂 Having grown up in the deep south in the 70’s, it will be interesting to see the similarities. When I was growing up, they didn’t have separate bathrooms. Many of them DID wear those outfits, though!
Back then people called them maids. Everyone who was anyone had one. (We weren’t “anyone” because we were transplants from the northwest and we did NOT have a maid.) When parents asked our friends who our maid was, they told them, “Amy, Gretchen and Ray!”
You will love it Gretchen! Take your tissues – you will cry tons! 🙂
I’m reading it now. Enjoying the interaction of the characters and how well that time in the South has been portrayed. But must say that reading all the dialogue is not quite as interesting as I’m sure it will be to hear the dialogue in a movie.
Definitely looking forward to seeing the movie but want to finish the book first. Hope you enjoyed it when you got to see the movie.
Janis
The movie was great! I think you will really like it. It wasn’t as good as the book, but few are!
The best part was enjoying it with friends and the other in the theater! All ages laughing and crying together!
