Before you can think about having style, you have to learn to look in the mirror and like what you see.
Isaac Mizrahi, * how to have style
I picked up this book at the library a couple of weeks ago and it has been fun and mindless reading for me. But you know what is not mindless? That quote. Yes. The one you are still thinking about. Do you – like what you see in the mirror? For so long, I have not. For so long I was not comfortable being the one photographed. What I Wore Wednesday has been like a light bulb moment for me. I have looked. And at 40 – I can honestly say, I am liking what I see more and more!
Last week, my friend Cyndi asked a question: “What is your favorite color to wear in winter?” Guess which color I said?
Black cardigan – Ann Taylor Loft
Black tunic dress – BJ’s Wholesale club
Black V-neck t-shirt – Old Navy
(p.s. what is up with my hair this week?)
And just in case you wonder what is on my feet most days:
1. Free from my friend Krystal
2. Payless bogo 3 years ago
3. DSW – last year
4. DSW
It is Wednesday. Be happy.
Oh, yes, Stacey. Liking what you see in the mirror is key. This exactly what the Lord impressed on my heart and became the foundation for the redefining beauty resources at http://www.moretobe.com. But God’s not done with teaching me about this nor is this message going away. He has me working with a committee of 10 teenage girls who are passionate about redefining beauty. Together, we are going to foster a movement of being unmasked within their school community, but their vision is to see this become a movement that can spread throughout the world. I covet your prayers as these girls grow in their passion to like what they see in the mirror!
Wow Lisa – that is amazing! I can’t wait to hear more! Praying for you as you lead them and for their hearts to move to the beat of His!
Oh, learning to like what we see is such a process! I remember my friends and I agonizing over looks in high school, but it seems like nothing compared to all of the pressure I see my high school cousins putting on themselves now. i like Facebook for keeping up with online friends, but lately I’m starting to wonder how it would have been for me as a teenager. Kind of like growing up with the paparazzi, I expect.
I think that same sense of “insecurity” can sneak it’s way into our lives no matter what age we are. I love what Lisa was saying about learning to redefine beauty. We could be grateful for how God made us and embrace our uniqueness! Now that would be awesome!
You look cute in black! Especially when you “spice it up” with such cute shoes. 🙂 I’m more apt to wear a bold colored top and black or brown shoes… I need to learn to accessorize better. 🙂
I love those red shoes! Adorable.
What is it with us about loving ourselves? I totally relate to being very critical of myself in the mirror. Especially at OVER 40. You are beautiful! And I love your style. Great outfits, adorable shoes.
Thank you Sherri! So nice to meet you!
