Deeply Loved .018

We sat in a circle talking about true love and what it means when I asked my four girls a simple question:

“Why do daddy and I love you?”

The four of them began to popcorn answers back and forth and trying to one up the other but what all amounted to was this:

We loved them because of something they did or some how they had made us proud.

I smiled and said, “So, what did you do on the day you were born except cause me a heap of pain? {insert their giggles} Because the moment we saw you, or rather the moment we knew you were ours nine months before, we started loving you.”

We love them because they are ours. Not because of something they have done or how much they impress us with their talents and words. We love them deeply and that is the truth.

 We too are deeply loved.

Jesus tells us so. And then he showed us:

For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.  For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Romans 5:6-8

Not only did we not do anything to deserve it, we pretty much did the opposite of deserving it. We were ungodly.  We were covered in sin. We caused him a heap of pain.

His endearing love is steadfast and faithful. His love is pursuing. It never gives up on me. It never lets go of you.

What if you lived with the knowledge that you are deeply loved today?  What if when we made our coffee and pulled on your boots we reminded ourselves we are his. Would it color your day filled with laundry, need meeting, taxi driving, and feet washing a bit differently?

Because here is the truth straight from Jesus himself:

“Just as the Father has loved Me, I have also loved you; abide in My love.”  John 15:9

Loved without measure.

Loved without condition.

Loved because you are his.

Loved in our ugly.

Loved in our mess.

You are deeply loved.

This truth breathes grace, don’t you think? Let’s live it.
